After the Korean War Canada's combat role became very restrictive with Peacekeeping missions forming the mainstay of active commitments. With the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq forces, Canada made the decision to join the Allied coalition which was formed and deployed to liberate the Kuwaitis. This action in the Middle East was followed up a decision to join forces sent to Afghanistan to help control terrorists activities and rebuild the country. This combat role came to a formal end in 2011 with a training assignment for Afghan security forces.
